EMERGENCY: Cooling Centers Open In Los Angeles County

Looks like it's going to be triple digit temperatures for the next several days. Everyone needs air conditioning in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley this week.

Check on family and neighbors. Obviously don't leave anything living in a hot car. You wouldn't leave children or pets in the car anyway, would you?

If you plan to be outdoors, please take precautions to protect yourself from the sun and heat
  • Avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the burning rays are strongest.
  • Reduce physical activity
  • Wear a wide - brimmed hat and light colored lightweight, loose - fitting clothes when you are outdoors
  • Avoid hot, heavy meals that include proteins
  • Set your air conditioner between 75 ° to 80 °
  • If you don’t have air - conditioning take a cool shower twice a day and visit a public air conditioned facility
  • Drink plenty of fluids even if you are not thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Use sun screen with a sun protection factor of at least 15 if you need to be in the sun
  •  Symptoms of dehydration and heat cramps include dizziness, fatigue, faintness, headaches, muscle cramps and increased thirst
During times of unbearable heat Los Angeles County provides cooling centers. Air conditioned spots that people can go to and cool off. Click here for a list of COOLING CENTERS

  8. Yeah, it is really important to have good air conditioning up here in Fort McMurray as well. I have lived without it in a few places, so I decided that I don't want to have to deal with it again if I can help it.

  9. I know exactly how this is. In Calgary, air conditioning has never been better. And now that it's getting colder, we haven't had to keep the AC on, but the summers sure can be brutal.

  29. I have never had to climb into my refrigerator just to cool off but I imagine that with temperatures in the triple digits that day may not be far off. How can I keep my home cool without running up my electricity bill? Preferably there is a way that also keeps me comfortable and chill.

  32. That picture is brilliantly funny! I wonder if I would stay in a refrigerator if I was that hot. It is actually going to be in the 90's today. I am so glad that my AC is working fine. http://www.eastcoastair.net.au/

  33. Our AC blew out last summer when we turned it on for the first time. It was awful timing since the temperature was in the 90's that day. We drank lots of water and went swimming in the bathtub to keep cool. We got it replaced so I sure hope it doesn't happen again.

  36. I really like the idea of sitting in my refrigerator too! It sure can get hot out in my neck of the woods during the summer. If I am not swimming, I have to be hanging out inside with the AC on full blast.

  43. The constantly changing fashionable take on air conditioning demonstrates the depth of the subject. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, air conditioning is not given the credit if deserves for inspiring many of the worlds famous painters. It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that air conditioning is rarely given rational consideration by those politicaly minded individuals living in the past, who just don't like that sort of thing

  47. These cooling centers can be very helpful while in summers, when the temperature gets pretty high. If you have an ac system in your home, then probably you don't need to visit these cooling centers. Regular cleaning of an ac unit's filters ensures that you won't need ac service performed quite often.
